FAIRVIEW FIRE DISTRICT RESPONDS TO FIRE AT METAL RECYCLING CENTER

Firefighters Battle Fire at 51 Fulton Street, Poughkeepsie

At approximately 2:33 pm, The Fairview Fire District and the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department under automatic mutual aid were dispatched for a reported fire endangering a building.  Upon arrival, firefighters found a well involved pile of compacted scrap metal, comprised mostly of scrap vehicles on fire with the fire endangering an industrial car compactor and a building.
Due to the nature of the fire, large amounts of foam was used to extinguish the stubborn blaze as the piles of scrap metal were taken apart by an excavator which also had to be called to assist at the scene.
Assisting at the scene included the Roosevelt Fire Department, Town of Poughkeepsie Fire Inspector, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response, and Tom Gleason Excavation.

The fire was declared to be out at 6:42 pm.  There were minor injuries to two fire personnel who were treated at the scene.
The fire has been determined to be accidental.
