For Immediate Release - Boating Incident at HRRA

Christopher Maeder, Chief
Fairview Fire District
258 Violet Avenue
Poughkeepsie, NY 12601

At approximately 5:33 PM, Fairview personnel were dispatched for a reported boat in distress in the Hudson River in the area of the Marist Boat House.   Fairview firefighters and EMT’s arrived approximately four minutes later to find multiple high school aged children in the water, with many being removed from the water by other boats.  These children were participating in crew practice and were from multiple area schools.

Fairview requested additional resources due to the number of children who had been submerged in the cold waters of the Hudson River.  A total of 57 children were evaluated and provided warmth due to their exposure.  Five high school aged children were transported to local medical facilities by Fairview and Mobile Life Support Services.

Additional assisting agencies at the scene were City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, New Hamburg Fire District, Highland Fire District, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, and Marist College Security.   There were no injuries to fire service personnel.

All units were cleared from the scene at approximately 7:42 PM.
